Credit Union Employees Make Strides Against Cancer

On Oct. 18 employees of Greater Alliance Federal Credit Union and their families participated in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk in Ridgefield Park. The credit union regularly raises money for the American Cancer Society in a few different ways. During the month of October, employees were able to donate $2 on Fridays to wear jeans.  At each branch, donations were collected in canisters and pink silly bands were sold to the members.  Finally, anyone visiting the site was invited to make a donation to the American Cancer Society.

Veronica DeJesus decided to take on the cause and become a Greater Alliance team leader along with her coworker, Carol Cleveland, a breast cancer survivor. Their efforts just this year have raised $3,169.

Cleveland was diagnosed with breast cancer seven years ago. She underwent treatment for nearly a year. First there was chemotherapy, followed by a mastectomy and 28 sessions of radiation. She worked at the credit union throughout her treatment except for three weeks after her surgery. Dr. Stanley Weintraub of Hackensack University Medical Center treated Cleveland, while her friend, Rose Samulka, took her to each of her treatments. Carol is tested regularly and remains cancer free.

“It is really touching to see all of the people you work with come out for your cause,” said Cleveland. “You don’t realize how many lives this disease can touch.”

“We have so many amazing stories at the credit union,” said Glenn Guinto, CEO of GAFCU. “I am so proud to support them and to see our employees having fun and doing great things.”
