October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month! We are excited to partner with Making Strides Against Breast Cancer to raise funds for the 6th year in a row!

Greater Alliance Fundraising Efforts!
At Greater Alliance we have incorporated “Jeans Friday” where any employee who would like to wear jeans will have to make a $2.00 contribution towards raising funds for Making Strides Against Breast Cancer.
We will also be participating at the walk at The Overpeck Park on, Sunday 16th October. So join us as we walk towards finding a cure for Breast Cancer!

We hope you had a fun and memorable summer with your families and loved ones. It sure has been a great summer for us here at Greater Alliance. We were able to see the fruits of our labor – it was a pleasure to see our members take advantage of, and benefit from, the various loan and deposit programs that we launched over the course of the summer months.
Fall is a good season for us. While we continue to provide the financial products and services that you have come to expect from your membership with Greater Alliance, we also take this opportunity to regroup after a busy summer of lending. This is a time for us to go back to the drawing board and analyze how we can keep improving our products and services to make them more attractive and more relevant to our membership.
Speaking of “drawing boards,” over the next several months we will be communicating important information regarding some technological enhancements that are happening at your credit union. Our team at Greater Alliance has been working hard to take us to the next level in terms of technology and remote services delivery. We are in the midst of great changes and we cannot wait to show you. In the meantime, I would like to invite everyone to update us with your most current information to make sure you don’t miss out on future communications. Three local high school seniors were presented scholarships at the 33rd annual Greater Alliance Federal Credit Union Golf Outing on May 16. The Rocco Montessano Scholarship Foundation, named for one of the credit union’s founders, awarded $7,500 in scholarship money in 2016. We would also like to thank all our sponsors and participants; with their help we were able to raise $10,400 for next year’s scholarship.
This year the scholarship application featured a twist. All applications had to be video submissions. Applicants were encouraged to share their submissions online with their friends and family to vote for their video. The top five vote-getters were judged by the scholarship committee at the credit union based on the following criteria- originality/creativity, ability to deliver a message in a clear, cohesive, and impactful way, effectiveness in addressing the scholarship question and accuracy of information presented.
The first prize of $3,500 went to Blake Bichler of Fair Lawn. He will be attending McDaniel College in Maryland studying exercise science. In Bichler’s video, he spoke about being a Red Cross lifeguard and saving one life in particular. He would ultimately like to work with the Commission Corps of the U.S. Public Health Service.
Nicholas Navarro of Paramus High School took the second prize of $2,500. He will be attending McPherson College in Kansas to study automotive restoration. His video spoke about how being an Eagle Scout taught him to be prepared. He was on the highway following an ambulance when the ambulance caught fire. He was ready with a fire extinguisher and was able to extinguish the fire.
The third place prize of $1,500 was awarded to Daphne Leenas of Lakeland High School. Her video spoke specifically about participating in a group called SWAP, Speak With a Peer, where she was able to learn how to support others during times of need.
Scholarships are earmarked for tuition, books, lodging or meal costs and will be made payable to the college or technical school the student is attending. Scholarships were presented to students at Ramsey Golf & Country Club by Greater Alliance Chief Executive Officer Glenn Guinto.
“We love getting to know all of our members at the credit union,” said Guinto. “This new video platform for our scholarships helped us to better understand the students applying and to see how creative they could be.”

Q: What’s an EMV chip card?
A: Visa EMV chip cards are a major advancement in card security technology, with an embedded microchip that stores and generates the information required to authenticate, authorize and process transactions.
Q: When will I receive a chip-enabled GAFCU EMV Visa® Debit Card?
A: We are in the process of becoming EMV ready. We anticipate being EMV ready in early part of 2016. As we get closer we will send out a communication informing you about the New EMV Card.
Q: When will I receive a chip-enabled GAFCU EMV Visa® Debit Card?
A: When we are EMV ready we will automatically send you a chip-enabled card when your current card expires.
Q: How are chip cards different from existing magnetic stripe card technology?
A: The EMV “chip” is a secure microprocessor built into a card or other payment devices (e.g. mobile wallet on smart phone). The chip generates a unique number for each sales transaction, making it extremely difficult to use a cloned card fraudulently on a card-present transaction. Magnetic stripe cards use static cardholder data that remains the same for every transaction, which makes them attractive targets for theft , cloning and use in card fraud. In addition to strong security features, chip technology includes other capabilities—like Near Field Communications (NFC) technology—which lets merchants accommodate both contact and contactless payments.
Q: Why are EMV chip cards being promoted as a payment standard in the US?
A: EMV chip cards are already well-established outside the US, particularly in Europe. Crime migrates to the easiest targets, which right now includes the US. Upgrading to the EMV standard is anticipated to greatly reduce card fraud here in the US.
Q: Will I still be able to use my GAFCU Visa card the same as always?
A: Yes, EMV chip cards do everything the magnetic stripe on the back of your card does now, but the chip gives you added security benefits and you are still protected from fraud by Visa’s Zero Liability policy*.
Q: How does chip technology protect my information?
A: Every time you use your card at a chip-enabled terminal, the embedded chip generates a unique transaction code. This prevents stolen data from being fraudulently used.
Q: Where can I use my chip-enabled card?
A: Whether you check out using chip technology or swipe your card, more places than ever now accept Visa debit or credit cards.
Q: How do I pay at a chip-enabled terminal?
A: It’s easy to make purchases with your chip-enabled debit card. Simply insert the chip end of your card into the terminal with the chip facing up. Leave your card in the terminal and follow the prompts on the screen. Remove your card from the terminal when prompted, then sign for your purchase and take your receipt.
Q: Why do I need to leave my card in the terminal?
A: While your card is in the chip-enabled terminal, the embedded chip creates a unique transaction code. This prevents stolen data from being fraudulently used. If you remove your card too soon, your transaction will be canceled.
Q: Can I still swipe my card to pay?
A: Yes. If a merchant is not yet chip-enabled, you can still swipe your card.
Q: Will I have to pay any fees to use my chip-enabled card?
A: No. There are no additional fees to use your new card.
Q: Does my new card have all the same benefits?
A: Yes. You can count on the same level of benefits you always have.
