Hawthorn, Passaic County, New Jersey, was incorporated into a municipality in Match 1898 by an act passed by the New Jersey Legislature. Hawthorne was the original home of the Leni Lanape Indians (1707).
There are two stories as to where Hawthorne got its name: it was named after the bush “hawthorne” that grew profusely in the area; and it was named after Nathaniel Hawthorne, an American short story writer and novelist (1804-1864).
