ATM Skimming

Protect Yourself from ATM Skimming: What to Look For

At Greater Alliance Credit Union, your security is our top priority. One of the most common fraud methods we want our members to be aware of is ATM skimming. Criminals use this tactic to steal card information and PINs by attaching hidden devices to ATMs or other card readers.

The good news is that with a little awareness and a few extra precautions, you can help protect yourself.

What Is ATM Skimming?

ATM skimming occurs when a small device is placed over the card slot of an ATM, gas pump, or payment terminal. This device captures the information stored on your card’s magnetic stripe. In some cases, hidden cameras or fake PIN pads are installed to capture your PIN as well.

How to Spot Suspicious ATMs

Before using an ATM, take a moment to look closely at the machine. Here are some warning signs:

  • Loose or bulky card reader – Tug on the card slot; if it feels loose or looks unusual compared to other ATMs, it may be a skimmer.
  • Extra attachments – Watch out for unusual pieces of plastic or metal, especially around the card slot or keypad.
  • Hidden cameras – Check for tiny holes or odd fixtures positioned near the keypad, which could conceal cameras.
  • Keypad overlays – If the keypad feels thicker than usual or the buttons are hard to press, it could be a fake keypad placed on top of the real one.

Tips to Protect Yourself

  • Cover your PIN – Always shield the keypad with your hand when entering your PIN.
  • Use familiar ATMs – Stick to machines at trusted, well-lit, high-traffic locations.
  • Inspect the machine – Take a quick look at the card slot and keypad before using it.
  • Check your accounts regularly – Monitor your transactions through Digital Banking and set up alerts for unusual activity.
  • Report suspicious ATMs – If something doesn’t look right, do not use the machine. Report it immediately to the financial institution or to us if it’s one of our ATMs.
