Summer President’s Message

Dear Valued Members:

Thank you for being a part of our financial cooperative, community and our growth. The dream of 5 Hackensack educators has flourished into what we all know now as Greater Alliance Federal Credit Union.

We had humble beginnings, having our first office in 1937 in the cloak closet of the Superintendent of Schools in Hackensack, NJ. In the 70’s, our records were manually kept on index cards in our filing cabinet stored in the bathtub of our Garden Apartment location on North Main Street. In the 80’s and 90’s, we had our first proper office locations. First at our Prospect Avenue location and eventually moving to our 359 Main Street location where we are still serving our members today.

Having been around for over 80 years and serving generations gives us a unique perspective on the ever-evolving financial needs of our membership. With our relatively modest budgets compared to our big bank competitors, we have always managed to provide our membership the latest banking processes and technological advancement available to allow them to manage their financial needs.

In the late 80’s/early 90’s, we were one of the first credit unions to offer full service ATMs including a drive-thru island ATM – the only one on Main St. In the mid-90’s, we were one of the first Credit Unions to have a web presence and offer PC home banking allowing our members convenient and secure access to their account(s) from the comfort of their homes.

As our families expanded to new generations that we also now serve, new ways of conducting one’s finances has also evolved. We believe it is one of our primary responsibilities to move our mission forward: to adapt our products and services and stay relevant to our membership, while maintaining our well-established relationships with our longer tenured members.

It is a delicate balance as one can imagine, but rest assured we are up for the task. Now serving our membership in 3 locations in Bergen and Passaic counties, we’ve come a long way from the early days. We can provide easy, convenient and more importantly, secure access to your accounts and most of our products and services from just about any device, 24/7 from anywhere you have Internet access.

Our members are discovering these convenient features and delivery methods. We have seen substantial growth over the past couple of years. If you are used to seeing our Member Services team, we eagerly await to serve you from any of our 3 physical locations.

Greater Alliance continues to grow, and with growth comes evolution. If any of our five founders were still around today and see us – they would see that we’ve definitely come a long way from our humble beginnings. They would find a lot of things that are different with the exception of one – our undying commitment to excellence in providing the highest quality financial services to our membership.
